Goodnight Mister Tom

I was invited  to design a cover for "Goodnight Mister Tom" as part of the 2020 Penguin Cover Competition to bring this original and unforgettable book to new readers and ensure that this book remains a must-read for every child.

I wanted to focus on the bond between Willie and Tom, the warmth and safety that Tom brings Willie whilst giving him security in the countryside. I also wanted to communicate the books difficult themes like loss and longing while conveying the importance of hope which underlines the story. Therefore depicting the train was important, with it being a huge symbol for WWII, there are so many emotions connected to it. The worry Willie felt from leaving the only home he ever knew and being sent into the unknown, the sadness of Tom and Willie having to say goodbye when his mother calls him back to London along with the hope that they will see each other again, and finally, the security Tom gives Willie after he rescues him from his abusive mother.
